For the longest, I’d thought that a JS file being in the <head> tag versus immediately after the opening <body> tag would make a difference perf-wise and render-wise. Turns out that’s not the case. Putting a script immediately before the closing </head> tag or immediately after the opening <body> tag makes zero difference. They’re both render blocking, unless you use the async property. This is one of those I can’t believe I didn’t know that years ago things.
